Pastor Paul Slack accepted his call to ministry at Bethel Baptist in San Diego, California. While at Bethel, he served in many capacities as a developing young minister and was on staff as Assistant to the Pastor for eight years. After serving at Bethel, Rev. Slack and his family relocated to Hartford, Connecticut and joined First Baptist Church of Hartford (Now First Cathedral). He and his family were very active at First Baptist. He served as the Shepherding Ministry Coordinator and then joined the staff as the Youth Pastor, and Dedra revitalized the churches nursery, making it a state of the art ministry; their children attended the nursery each Sunday.
While in Connecticut, Pastor Slack served as a teacher in First Baptist’s Bible College, Interim Pastor for Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Stamford, Connecticut and helped organize two community events: The Sacred Assemble (A state wide event bringing people together for reconciliation) and Prayer on the Playground (A Hartford area partnership between churches, schools and families).
After Connecticut, Rev. Slack and his family relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where they united with Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. He eventually joined the staff as Christian Education Director, revitalizing their education program; Dedra played a key role in this project. Rev. Slack is most proud of the many relationships formed while at Mt. Pleasant, and considers Mt. Pleasant family.
Rev. Slack was called to Zion Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota to serve as Co-Pastor. After two years, Rev. Slack left Zion and founded New Creation Church. Rev. Slack started New Creation with four families in his living room in 2003. Though uncertain about the journey at the time, he and his family committed themselves to building a ministry. Through his leadership, the church committed themselves to understanding God’s will for His church through a Kingdom Focused Church study. Pastor Paul also thought it important to prepare the church to resolve conflict according to God’s Word, so he led the congregation in a Peacemaker series that guides the congregation in building a culture of peace. Through that preparation, New Creation practices Biblical principles in resolving conflict in church, at home and beyond; lives are made better. Through his leadership, New Creation is currently developing a powerful Prayer Ministry that retrieves God’s direction for our lives from the supernatural realm, and a state of the art youth program that prepares our youth with the tools to succeed, no matter what obstacles they face.
In 2011, Rev. Slack led the church from a modest location in Brooklyn Park to our current location in North Minneapolis; it is God’s gift to our ministry.
In addition to serving as Pastor of New Creation, Rev. Slack has worked with ISAIAH for over 10 years. ISAIAH is a multi-racial organization of 100 churches in Minnesota and works for racial and economic justice in the state. Pastor Paul is now president of ISAIAH and has been a driving force for the organization to become multi-racial. ISAIAH reflects a multi-racial identity through a strong African American presence, a strong Latino presence, a strong Caucasian presence, our campaign for Immigrant rights, worker dignity campaign, education work to close the racial achievement gap, and many other efforts to affirm the dignity of all God’s people. ISAIAH’s recent event at the Minneapolis Convention Center with over 1600 people in attendance, had approximately 50% people of color, a major milestone in Minnesota. Pastor Slack’s leadership is a key reason ISAIAH is a powerful force for racial justice.
Pastor Slack holds a BA from Point Loma Nazarene College and a Masters of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School.
He and his wife Dedra have been married for 23 years and have enjoyed working side by side in ministry and in life. They have two sons. Paul Timothy graduated from Clark University Atlanta and is a teacher in Minneapolis. Caleb is currently attending Alcorn State University in Missississippi. He and Dedra are proud of their two sons and their passion for their perspective careers. Faithfulness is a calling from God; Pastor Slack is trying to live a faithful life.
